The Story Behind BBC Sport’s Mixed Reality Studio at EURO 2024

A look at how the tech marvel anchored the network's soccer coverage this past summer

One of the sports production technology highlights from 2024 was BBC Sport’s LED-based mixed reality presentation studio setup that it deployed in Berlin, Germany for the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship.

Two mixed-reality presentation studio areas were installed opposite the Brandenburg Gate: one on the roof terrace and one inside. Both made use of extended reality (XR), augmented reality (AR), and LED screens to provide a museum-themed look and feel that complimented the city’s architecture and engaging on-screen visuals to showcase match data and statistics for viewers.

In a special presentation breaking down the set, BBC Sport’s Design Director John Murphy is joined by Chris Izatt, Director of Innovation & Virtual for AE Live and Olaf Sperwer, Business Development Manager for Virtual Production at ROE Visual to share what went into it and what they learned along the way.Watch Now on SVG PLAY:
