Producing a Live Gymnastics Meet: Behind the Broadcast with Auburn’s War Eagle Productions

An in-depth look at the people, technology, and strategy that it takes to tell a linear story in gymnastics

One college sport most sharply in popularity these days is gymnastics and, as the season got underway earlier this month, viewers might notice more meets on their TVs and streaming services.

Producing live gymnastics is not easy as the event provides a challenge for telling an engaging, linear live story for fans viewing at home. Hardly anyone does it better than the crew at Auburn University’s War Eagle Productions. The in-house production arm of the Tigers’ athletics department has become a trusted outfit for delivering live gymnastics shows to platforms like ESPN+, the SEC Network, and elsewhere.

In this exclusive presentation, leaders from various roles on the crew offer a behind-the-scenes look at the work involved in producing live gymnastics at Auburn—from the resources required to the creative storytelling decisions, and the systems that make the story easier and more enjoyable to follow.

The presenters are:

  • Jadon Downs, Auburn University, Broadcast Engineer
  • Parker Leppien, Auburn University, Director, Live Operations and Programming
  • Jake Maze, Auburn University, Director, Videoboard Production
  • Aiden Tugman, Auburn University, Coordinator, Live Operations
